I'm STEPHANIE KOVAC. Founder, Owner, President, CEO and Executive Producer of Wishcraft Productions. You could say, the magic starts with me.
I owe my start in TV to a man few within my industry probably even remember: Leon Klinghoffer. In October 1985, the 69-year-old disabled retiree was celebrating his 36th wedding anniversary with a cruise on the Achille Lauro. The Jewish-American father of two was singled out when members of the Palestinian Liberation Front stormed the ship. He was shot execution-style while sitting in his wheelchair, then thrown overboard.
I was a freshman in college when the life - and tragic death - of Mr. Klinghoffer was profiled on an NBC documentary. I was so deeply affected by his story that I knew - at that moment - I wanted to spend my life telling other people's stories. Because one life has the power to change countless others.
In 1998, I formed my own production company, Wishcraft Productions. As a freelancer, I have seen it all. I've covered the tragedies that have torn apart lives and the defining moments in which people have found a way through their grief. And, one thing always rings true: everybody has a story.
In short, that's the reason I do what I do. I'm a storyteller. What's more difficult to explain is how my own life has been enriched by the lives of so many others.
It has been said if you do what you love, you never work a day in your life. I never have. For that, I owe a debt of gratitude to a man I met only on TV... a man whose own story charted the course of my career... a man named Leon Klinghoffer.
